Early Literacy Through Family Literacy

This project has been funded through the generosity of Ronald McDonald House Charities.  Our thanks!

Two Together has received a Ronald McDonald grant to initiate a program to support family literacy throughout Albany City elementary schools.

The project involves sponsoring a literacy educator to address kindergarten orientations and  providing each family in attendance with a bag of materials to help them engage in literacy activities. The presentation at kindergarten orientations includes advice on how some simple activities can be integrated into daily routines and how these activities promote reading ability.

Besides reading to their children, parents are encouraged to: 1) Talk to their children, 2) Sing with their children, 3) Watch television with their children and talk about it afterwards, 4) Tell their children stories, 5) Use books as props for fun interactions. The literacy educator also models various interactions around books. The book bags include two books, informational packets, library card applications, information about literacy volunteers and a postcard parents can return if they want further involvement in the project.
