Two Together is a free after-school and summer reading and writing program that has been operating a high need community in the South End of Albany, New York since 1997. Its purpose is to strengthen children's social, cultural and intellectual growth through improved language and literacy skills in a s safe environment that fosters a life-long love and enthusiasm for learning.

Modeled on a program developed in Manhattan by Dorothy Silverman in 1970, the Albany Program was organized by Rena Button, the program's first president, with help from a grant from Albany philanthropist Morris Silverman. Button and her board brought together the institutions that today are partners in the project: the YMCA, the Giffen Memorial Elementary School, The College of Saint Rose, and Two Together. An independent segment of the local YMCA's after-school network, the Two Together project makes good use of community resources and actively works to involve parents and caregivers of the children in the program.
On Two Together's 10th anniversary in 2007, over 1,000 children will have received benefit and pleasure from having a tutor of their very own to help them with reading, writing and homework. The heart of our program is individualized one-to-one tutoring.
SUNY Albany provides a wealth of tutors to the program. SUNY students serve both as volunteers and as means of earning college credit in community service. Tutors also come from other area colleges and graduate schools, from Albany High School and from the community. After-school classroom space is provided by the Albany Housing Authority. Two Together continues to strive to achieve one-on-one tutoring as the "gold standard" for achieving improvement in literacy. Tutors are always needed!
